Synthetic Paper options for
Waterproof Map Paper Applications...

Ruff N Tuff and Power Paper are distinct enough to provide unique options for waterproof map paper and other common synthetic paper applications.

Paper Size Comparison Table:
 

Ruff N Tuff is water-resistant, not waterproof.  Also, it is less expensive than the other options.  The strength of this paper is its three layer composition.  The outer layers provide a paper-realistic feel (unlike the plastic feel of other synthetic papers) and an excellent print quality at this price point.

Ruff N Tuff is sufficiently tear-resistant to make it worth consideration when looking for a less expensive alternative to a waterproof map paper.  However, staples or hole-punches will tend to compromise the tear-resistance at those points on the page where rips can occur (less easily than normal paper, but more easily than if left intact).

Glossy Map Paper Option:  Ruff N Tuff Gloss... 

Ruff N Tuff Gloss is a gloss-coated version of Ruff N Tuff, appropriate for mounted maps, outdoor map posters, or single-page maps, if a glossy map paper appearance is desired.   We do not recommend this product for folded maps, because of its thickness. 

Power Paper is waterproof.  It is available in two versions:  a laser/copier version and an inkjet version.  The laser version is totally waterproof.  The inkjet version's degree of success as a waterproof paper is more dependent on the particular type of inkjet printer and type of ink used.  If you are running on an inkjet machine, we recommend samples testing on your particular setup before determining the suitability of the product.  

Additional strengths of Power Paper which allows it to work well as a waterproof map paper include the ability to fold easily and its high tear-resistance.  This paper will stretch first, before tearing, when put under an extreme test.  Also, the tear resistance of Power Paper is not compromised when stapled or otherwise punctured (hole-punches, etc).

Note on the Inkjet Version of Power Paper:  We recommend testing samples of Inkjet Power Paper before making a purchase.  Samples are also readily available for Laser Power Paper, Ruff N Tuff, and Ruff N Tuff Gloss.

HP LaserJet Tough is another excellent waterproof paper.  It is thinner than Power Paper, making it suitable for applications where a less bulky sheet is required.  However, it is only available in 8.5" x 11".  Power Paper is available in a wider range of sizes.  A final advantage of HP LaserJet Tough Paper is its availability from local HP Resellers, which may be more convenient, and worth investigating.
